The reign of Emperor Akbar (1556–1605) was a period of significant political and religious transformation in the Indian subcontinent. As the Mughal Empire expanded its influence into the Pakhtun regions, questions of political authority, religious identity and resistance became increasingly intertwined. Among the most intriguing chapters of this period was the ideological and religious contestation between two influential figures, Akhun Darwaiza and Bayazid Ansari, also known as Pir Roshan.

Akhun Darwaiza emerged as a prominent religious scholar and critic of Bayazid Ansari’s teachings and spiritual movement. Bayazid Ansari, meanwhile, advanced a distinctive religious and intellectual vision that attracted followers across the Pakhtun regions and challenged established religious authority. Their disagreement extended beyond theological differences, reflecting wider tensions over religious interpretation, social influence and political power.

How did Akbar’s imperial ambitions shape the religious and political landscape of the Pakhtun regions? What were the ideas and motivations that brought Akhun Darwaiza and Bayazid Ansari into opposition? To what extent did their conflict reflect a deeper struggle over religious authority, cultural identity and resistance to imperial power?

This session will revisit an important yet relatively less explored chapter of South Asian history, examining the lives, ideas and competing legacies of these two figures. It will also explore how religion, politics and imperial expansion interacted in shaping Pakhtun society during the 16th century.
