Book Talk: Politics of Hate

Book Talk: Politics of Hate

2025 was the year of wars; India vs. Pakistan, Cambodia vs. Thailand, Iran vs Israel amid the continuing genocide in Gaza as well as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In 2026, following the 28th February unlawful US-Israel led military intervention in Iran, people had already started asking: ‘Are we faced with World War 3?’

At the centre of this global chaos happened to be Donald Trump, the populist far-right President, not just of the United States, but arguably, the entire world. The US President normalized anti-immigrant rhetoric, anti-immigrant raids and crackdown on academic freedoms and civil liberties. This combination of factors has landed us in a political landscape where ‘hate speech’ is seen as ‘free speech’, where disregard of international law is sported as a badge of honour by populist far-right leaders and where AI helps peddle disinformation and hate speech at the speed of lightning.

How does one navigate this complex world for which perhaps our generation did not even have sufficient time to prepare? Where is our world headed to? Is the international rules-based order effectively dead?
