The Case for Counselling in Education: Trauma, Learning, and the Classroom

Education is often measured through grades, examinations and academic achievements. But behind every student is a world of emotions, experiences, fears, insecurities and aspirations that can profoundly shape the way they learn.

A child who struggles to concentrate, withdraws from classroom activities or displays challenging behaviour may not simply be disinterested or difficult. Sometimes, there are deeper emotional and psychological experiences that need to be understood.

How do stress, trauma and adverse childhood experiences affect learning and behaviour? Why is emotional safety just as important as academic instruction? And how can teachers and educational institutions create environments where students feel understood, supported and confident enough to learn?

This session explores the role of educational counselling and psychology, with a particular focus on trauma-informed pedagogies. It invites us to rethink the conventional classroom, move beyond the mere transfer of knowledge, and recognise the individual needs of every learner.
