Thinking, Feeling, Doing: What Makes Learning Complete?
What does it truly mean to learn? Is it enough to acquire knowledge, remember facts and pass examinations, or does meaningful learning require something more: the ability to think critically, the motivation to engage, and the capacity to turn ideas into action?
Learning is often approached primarily through the cognitive domain, focusing on knowledge, comprehension and intellectual skills. Yet learning also involves the affective domain, encompassing emotions, interests, attitudes and values, and the psychomotor domain, which relates to physical skills, practical engagement and the ability to put knowledge into practice.
How do these three dimensions interact? Can curiosity, emotional engagement and intrinsic motivation help learners move beyond memorisation towards analysis, evaluation and creative thinking? And what happens when our educational environments prioritise examinations and information recall while leaving little room for exploration, experimentation and independent thought?
This session will examine the relationship between thinking, feeling and doing, and explore how their integration may contribute to deeper learning and higher-order thinking. It will also question the limitations of conventional teaching approaches and consider why many learners struggle to progress from acquiring knowledge to applying, questioning and creating with it.
What changes are needed in our classrooms, teaching methods and assessment systems to nurture learners who can think independently, engage meaningfully and translate their ideas into practice?
