Both challenged British imperial power, yet they produced dramatically different outcomes. The American Revolution ultimately led to independence, while the 1857 uprising in India was defeated and followed by a profound restructuring of British rule.

What explains the difference? Was it military organisation, political leadership, unity among the rebels, geography, popular participation, foreign support, economic resources, or the very different ways in which British power operated in the two contexts?

Rather than looking only at the battles, this session will dig deeper into the political, military, social and geopolitical forces that shaped the two struggles. What made the American Revolution capable of sustaining a prolonged war against Britain? Why did the 1857 uprising struggle to develop a unified political and military strategy? And how important were external alliances, particularly French support for the American revolutionaries?
