Fire at PIMS: Where Do We Go From Here?

Fire at PIMS: Where Do We Go From Here?

The recent fire at PIMS, Islamabad, that claimed the lives of several infants has once again raised deeply troubling questions about safety and emergency preparedness in our public hospitals.

Hospitals are places where people go seeking care, safety and hope. For critically ill newborns and their families, that sense of safety is even more fundamental. When a fire breaks out in such a setting, the consequences can be devastating. But beyond the immediate tragedy lies a larger question: could this have been prevented, and what must change to ensure that it never happens again?

This conversation will look beyond the tragedy itself to examine hospital fire safety, emergency preparedness, evacuation protocols, infrastructure, institutional responsibility and accountability. What systems are supposed to be in place to protect patients, particularly those who cannot protect themselves? Where did those systems fail, and what can be done differently?
